Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Begins Relocation... Busan Secures All 100 Official Residences

Employees with Families Begin Moving into New Complex on December 5
Mayor Park Hyungjoon Visits Official Residences to Welcome Newcomers

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has begun its relocation to Busan.

The Busan Metropolitan Government announced that it has secured all 100 official residences it had prepared for the ministry's move, and that, starting from December 5, employees relocating with their families will begin moving in in earnest.

The city completed the process of outsourcing the official residence support project on November 28, and Busan Urban Corporation, the entrusted agency, signed lease contracts for 100 apartment and officetel units.

On the afternoon of the same day, Busan Mayor Park Hyungjoon will personally visit the official residence in Yangjeong-dong, Busanjin-gu, to welcome the first families moving in. He plans to visit a family relocating to Busan with their mother and a family with a pregnant woman expecting to give birth soon, to welcome them to their new homes.

The city explained that it has fulfilled its key promise of securing official residences as part of its housing support measures to facilitate the swift relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

Believing that supporting settlement would be limited without ensuring stable housing for employees with families, the city has prioritized the supply of official residences as its top task.

The official residences consist of 83 apartment units and 17 officetel units in a newly built complex in Yangjeong-dong, Busanjin-gu. Each unit has an exclusive area of 70 to 76 square meters and offers convenient access to the ministry's temporary office within 20 minutes. The location is near an elementary school and a subway station, and features parking facilities, providing practical living conditions.

Busan Metropolitan Government, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Busan Urban Corporation, Korea Housing & Urban Guarantee Corporation, and the complex owners have worked together to resolve relocation challenges such as negotiations, guarantee requirements, and securing sufficient units, thereby officially launching the relocation process.

Since July, the city has surveyed 21 new apartment complexes with more than 20 available units and selected 10 as the first-round candidates based on willingness to lease and pricing.

After further discussions with the ministry, the city held in-depth talks regarding five complexes and finalized the official residences by considering factors such as preference, budget, and guarantee eligibility.

The supply of 100 official residences attracted significant interest from ministry employees. According to a preliminary demand survey and applications, 136 people applied, reaching 136% of the available supply.

Prior to the first move-in, the city completed inspections of each unit and checked for defects, and stated that it will continue to work with Busan Urban Corporation to minimize initial inconveniences. The city also plans to continuously monitor the settlement of relocated employees and their families and provide necessary support.

Mayor Park stated, "The relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries marks an important turning point for Busan as it moves toward becoming a global hub maritime city, and this first move-in is a meaningful moment when relocating employees and their families become 'Busan citizens.' I hope the official residences serve as a strong starting point, and we will continue to support the relocated institutions and the local community so that they can grow together."
