The World Hydrogen Expo (WHE) 2025, the largest hydrogen event in the Asia-Pacific region, opened on December 4 at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The event, which integrates a hydrogen industry exhibition and an international conference, will run until December 7 and features participation from 279 companies and organizations representing 26 countries worldwide.

Hyundai Motor Group set up the largest exhibition hall at the event, showcasing technologies spanning the entire hydrogen value chain-including production, storage, transportation, and refueling-as well as a variety of mobility solutions utilizing hydrogen fuel cells.

At the center of the booth, a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis hydrogen production system was introduced through models and videos for easy understanding. Core transportation and storage technologies, such as ammonia cracking and liquid hydrogen storage systems, were also unveiled.

Also on display were a large trailer-based mobile hydrogen refueling station and a hydrogen automatic charging robot, which uses a robotic arm to connect the charging plug automatically, demonstrating the potential of future refueling infrastructure. In addition, Hyundai Motor Group presented a variety of mobility applications using hydrogen fuel cells, highlighting the potential for expansion into ships, military vehicles, and tractors.

Hyundai Steel also participated in the Hyundai Motor Group booth, presenting a detailed vision of the electric arc furnace to be built in Louisiana, USA, in 2029, along with a long-term technology roadmap leading to hydrogen-based steelmaking.

Kolon Group introduced technologies from its affiliates, including Kolon Industries, Kolon ENP, and Kolon Spaceworks. Kolon Industries exhibited advanced hydrogen technology components and materials such as moisture control devices, PEM water electrolysis systems, and membrane electrode assemblies (MEA), which are key to hydrogen mobility. The moisture control device is a product applied to Hyundai’s The All-New Nexo. Kolon Spaceworks showcased its self-developed carbon fiber intermediates and hydrogen fuel tanks.

HD Construction Equipment unveiled its large 22-liter hydrogen engine for the first time. This 22-liter hydrogen engine is the largest in the world, featuring a V-type 12-cylinder structure with a maximum output of 600 kW (816 horsepower) and a continuous output of 477 kW (649 horsepower), enough to meet the annual electricity demand of about 200 households. The engine was first started at the Gunsan plant on November 12.

In addition, a wide range of hydrogen-related products were exhibited, including materials, components, and equipment for water electrolysis, technologies and products for clean hydrogen production such as ammonia decomposition, hydrogen electric buses, hydrogen electric trucks, hydrogen electric trams, hydrogen refueling systems, and liquid hydrogen storage tanks.

This year’s event also saw participation from 95 companies and organizations from abroad, reinforcing its status as an international event. Fourteen companies and organizations from Germany, including Henkel Loctite, Leonik Korea, and T?V S?D Korea, participated, followed by Australia (13), the United States (9), and France (6).

This year, the Hydrogen Council Annual Meeting-a coalition of CEOs from more than 140 hydrogen companies worldwide-was held in Korea, creating an environment for diverse international companies to participate.

The international conference is organized into three tracks, bringing together governments from major countries such as Australia, Germany, and Japan, as well as international organizations like the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE), to share the current status of the hydrogen economy and discuss international cooperation strategies for ecosystem expansion.

The government expressed its commitment to actively support the hydrogen industry to achieve the '2035 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)' greenhouse gas reduction target. At the opening ceremony, Kim Seonghwan, Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment, stated, "We plan to fundamentally transform our industrial and economic structures through the transition to green industries," adding, "We will systematically support the development of the hydrogen ecosystem, which is a key tool for industrial innovation and decarbonization."

At the opening ceremony, Jang Jaehun, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group and Co-Chair of the Hydrogen Council, emphasized, "Hydrogen is an energy source with significant value due to its eco-friendliness and diverse applications," and added, "We must not lose our initiative in the means of utilizing hydrogen from a global perspective." He continued, "The Hydrogen Council Summit will serve as a venue for participating companies to discuss their activities and strategic challenges in building the hydrogen ecosystem."

The opening ceremony was attended by more than 400 people, including National Assemblyman Lee Jongbae, co-chair of the National Assembly Hydrogen Economy Forum, co-chairs of the organizing committee (Kim Jaehong, President of the Korea Hydrogen Alliance, and Kang Namhoon, President of the Korea Automobile Mobility Industry Association), as well as representatives from foreign governments, international organizations, domestic and international industries, and related institutions.
