Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital announced on December 2 that Sohyun Kim, a researcher at the hospital's Human Bioresource Bank, received a commendation from the Director of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency in recognition of her contributions to human resource management and research support.
Since the early days of the Human Bioresource Bank project in 2008, Kim has worked as a practitioner for over 17 years, dedicating her efforts to establishing and strengthening the collection, quality management, and researcher support systems for human bioresources, which are the core foundation of health research in Korea.
During her tenure, Kim collected and managed clinical information and samples from over 40,000 cancer patients, thereby ensuring the stable acquisition of human bioresources and laying the groundwork for their use in research.
She was responsible for the entire process, from sample collection to storage and clinical data linkage. In particular, as the data management officer, she organized thousands of clinical data entries in accordance with the KBN CDM 3.0 standards, maintaining a trustworthy resource environment for researchers.
Kim also demonstrated her expertise in the field of quality management. In 2022, she obtained the KOLAS biobank assessor qualification, a high-level professional credential held by only a few in Korea. Leveraging this, she contributed to aligning the quality management system of the Human Bioresource Bank with international standards.
In addition, Kim has taken the lead in supporting researchers. She has regularly presented posters at events such as the Korean Basic Medical Science Conference and the Hwasun Biomedical Workshop, introducing the status of resource distribution and the potential for research utilization, thereby enhancing researchers' understanding and actively promoting the distribution of resources.
As the designated national backup bank manager by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, Kim has systematically managed backup resources of over 300,000 vials, contributing to the stable preservation of national health resources.
Alongside these efforts, Kim has also played an important role in training new researchers and staff from partner institutions, sharing standardized sample management procedures and fostering the next generation of professionals.
Hospital Director Min Jeongjun stated, "The dedication and expertise of researcher Sohyun Kim are key assets supporting the foundation of national health research," adding, "This commendation is a meaningful achievement that publicly recognizes her 17 years of steadfast effort."
