A man in his 30s turned himself in to the police after posting a false "public address" online, impersonating President Lee Jaemyung.
On December 2, the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that they had apprehended and are currently investigating a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, on charges including obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means. Mr. A surrendered himself to the police at around 12:30 p.m. the previous day.
Mr. A is accused of impersonating President Lee and posting online statements claiming an "increase in capital gains tax rates on overseas stocks and the introduction of a new property holding tax."
The police are investigating the circumstances under which Mr. A wrote and posted the message.
A police official stated, "Acts of impersonating government agencies or officials to produce or disseminate false information are serious crimes that cause significant social confusion and distrust. We will pursue not only those who produce and spread such disinformation, but also those behind them, to the very end, with a zero-tolerance policy, centered on the Disinformation Response Task Force."
