Honoring the Noble Sacrifice of Independence Activist Dr. Youngjun Park
Raising Public Awareness and Engagement
The Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Director: Lee Namil) has selected the Monument to Dr. Youngjun Park in Chilam-ri, Ilgwang-myeon, Gijang-gun as the 'Memorial Facility of the Month' for December.
Dr. Youngjun Park (1885-1943), a native of Dongnae, Busan, was a leading figure in the independence movement in the Gijang region during the Japanese colonial period, spearheading the March 1st Movement in the area.
On April 5, 1919, he organized a demonstration for Korean independence by rallying the crowd and residents during market day in Gijang-myeon, Dongnae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. On April 11, he led another protest with about 50 residents in Icheon-ri, Ilgwang-myeon, and was subsequently arrested. He was sentenced to one year in prison by the Busan District Court, and the sentence was finalized at the Daegu High Court, after which he served his term. In recognition of his achievements, the government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriotic Medal, in 1990.
The Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs selects and promotes a 'Memorial Facility of the Month' every month to help citizens experience these facilities up close and to foster a culture of honoring patriots in daily life.
A representative from the Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs stated, "We will continue to promote the establishment and designation of memorial facilities so that citizens can reflect on the noble spirit of sacrifice and contributions of Dr. Youngjun Park and feel a sense of respect and honor in their daily lives."
