A Turning Point for Hydrogen Transportation Infrastructure Expansion
Completion of Chuncheon Hydrogen Mobility Complex Base
6,650 Hydrogen Vehicles in the Province by 2030
Plan to Expand to 30 Hydrogen Charging Stations
The "Hydrogen Mobility Complex Base" established in Hakkok-ri, Dongnae-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon Province, will hold its completion ceremony on December 2 and officially begin operations. This completion is considered a key pillar of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province's policy to promote eco-friendly mobility through hydrogen, and is seen as a turning point for expanding hydrogen transportation infrastructure in the Gangwon region.

The Chuncheon Hydrogen Mobility Complex Base is the first comprehensive hydrogen mobility infrastructure in the country to integrate a hydrogen liquefaction filling station, maintenance facilities, a complex management building, a high-pressure container inspection building, parking lots, and garages in one location. In particular, the introduction of hydrogen liquefaction-based charging technology has enabled the stable operation of commercial vehicles such as hydrogen buses and hydrogen trucks.
The project was carried out from 2022 to 2025 with a total project cost of 19.95 billion won (9.95 billion won from the national government, 3 billion won from the provincial government, and 7 billion won from the city government). It was jointly promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and Chuncheon City, and implemented by Gangwon Technopark.
The hydrogen liquefaction filling station within the base can supply more than 2,000 kg per day, which is enough to charge about 100 hydrogen buses. This is expected to serve as a foundation for expanding the adoption of hydrogen buses in the Gangwon region and for the eco-friendly transition of commercial vehicles.
As of November, a total of 3,466 hydrogen vehicles have been distributed in the province, marking the highest level nationwide in terms of vehicles per capita.
Currently, there are 15 hydrogen charging stations operating in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, including the Chuncheon base. With the opening of new stations in Tongdong, Taebaek in December and in Nohak-dong, Sokcho in March next year, the total will expand to 17. In addition, discussions are underway to establish additional stations in Jumunjin (Gangneung), Goseong, and Donghae.
Kim Gwangrae, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, stated, "The Chuncheon Hydrogen Mobility Complex Base is more than just transportation infrastructure; it is a core facility for Gangwon's leap into the future climate tech industry. As the government is also working to supply 300,000 hydrogen vehicles nationwide by 2030 to achieve carbon neutrality, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province plans to expand the number of hydrogen vehicles to 6,650 and the number of charging stations to 30."
