"No Likelihood of Transition to Emergency Committee"
Jeon Hyunhee, Senior Supreme Council Member of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated, "I have deliberated for a long time, but now I have decided to run and am preparing for it."
On December 1, during an appearance on CBS Radio's "Kim Hyun-jung's News Show," Jeon said, "I have had many concerns. When I previously ran in Gangnam, I decided to put the party before myself, hoping to break down regionalism and classism, and made the sacrifice for the party. This time as well, I have spent a long time with similar concerns, but I have now made up my mind," she said.
She emphasized, "This Seoul mayoral election is extremely important and one that we must win. I believe the conservative landscape in Seoul has become much more pronounced. That is why the Democratic Party's candidate must be someone who can definitely win." She continued, "I have worked closely with President Lee Jaemyung since his time as party leader, and we have been together through the end of the rebellion and the creation of a new administration," adding, "I also have strengths in having led the party's reform agenda at the forefront."
Jeon further stated, "Above all, what matters most is the ability to appeal to moderates," and added, "For the Democratic Party to win in Seoul, it must secure many votes from the Gangnam area. Having served as a National Assembly member in Gangnam, I have the ability to appeal to voters there." She also said, "My dual professional background as a dentist and a lawyer is a strength that can appeal to voters in Gangnam and other professionals," and "my three years of experience as Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, during which I traveled nationwide to resolve civil complaints, will also serve as an advantage."
Meanwhile, Jeon noted, "Regarding the future management of the current leadership, I understand that about three Supreme Council Members, including myself, have decided to run." She said that she, along with Kim Byungjoo and Han Junho, would participate in the local elections. The Democratic Party of Korea has a total of nine Supreme Council Members, and if five or more resign, the leadership transitions to an emergency committee system. Jeon commented on this, "Since only three are resigning now, it seems unlikely that an emergency committee will be formed, and I believe the remaining members will continue to fulfill their leadership roles admirably."
