Hyundai Steel Unveils Model of U.S. Electric Arc Furnace Steel Plant for the First Time at World Hydrogen Expo

To Be Held at KINTEX, Gyeonggi Province, from December 4 to 7

Hyundai Steel announced on December 1 that it will unveil a model of its planned electric arc furnace steel plant in Louisiana, United States, for the first time at the Hyundai Motor Group booth during the 'World Hydrogen Expo (WHE) 2025.' The expo will take place from December 4 to 7 at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.

WHE 2025 is a global hydrogen industry event where hydrogen-related companies from around the world participate to share the latest technologies and industry trends while seeking opportunities for collaboration. Starting this year, the 'Hydrogen International Conference' and the hydrogen industry exhibition 'H2MEET' have been integrated into a single platform that encompasses both the conference and the exhibition.

At this event, Hyundai Steel will present the detailed plans for its electric arc furnace steel plant in the United States, which is scheduled to begin commercial production in 2029, as well as its mid- to long-term technology roadmap toward hydrogen-based steelmaking.

Visitors will be able to see at a glance the main processes of the steel plant and nearby infrastructure through a bird's-eye view model, including the Direct Reduction Plant (DRP) for producing direct reduced iron (DRI), the electric arc furnace, and hot and cold rolling facilities.

Additionally, the exhibition video illustrates the mid- to long-term transition process in which the direct reduction process, initially using natural gas as a reducing agent, gradually increases the proportion of hydrogen, ultimately achieving hydrogen-based steelmaking. In particular, visitors can gain a comprehensive understanding of Hyundai Steel’s core process technologies and equipment roadmap currently under research and development, its mid- to long-term vision for achieving net zero, and the future value the company aims to realize. This allows visitors to see Hyundai Steel’s carbon neutrality strategy, from technologies that will be commercialized in the near future to its long-term technology goals.

A Hyundai Steel representative stated, "Through this World Hydrogen Expo, we will showcase Hyundai Steel’s future vision and technological capabilities on the global stage and actively demonstrate our role in contributing to Hyundai Motor Group’s carbon neutrality strategy."
