33.7 Million Coupang Customer Records Leaked in Hacking Incident... "Payment Information Remains Secure" Yonhap News Agency

On November 29, Coupang announced that the number of customer accounts with exposed personal information was confirmed to be 33.7 million. This figure is approximately 75,000 times higher than the previously reported 4,500 accounts, effectively indicating that almost all customer data has been compromised.

The exposed information includes names, email addresses, shipping addresses, and shipping phone numbers. However, Coupang stated that payment information, credit card numbers, and login credentials were not leaked.

The total number of Coupang members has not been publicly disclosed, but as of the third quarter, the number of active customers in the product commerce segment (those with purchase history) was 24.7 million.

In a press release, Coupang stated, "According to the investigation so far, it is estimated that unauthorized access to personal information occurred via overseas servers starting from June 24 of this year." The company added, "We have since blocked the unauthorized access route and strengthened internal monitoring."

Coupang also reported, "We immediately notified the relevant authorities, including the National Police Agency, the Korea Internet & Security Agency, and the Personal Information Protection Commission."

Additionally, Coupang announced that it has brought in security experts to conduct an investigation and is continuing to cooperate with law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

The company concluded, "We sincerely apologize for all concerns caused by this incident, and we ask customers to be cautious of phone calls, text messages, or other communications impersonating Coupang."
