The National Police Agency announced on November 27 that it will conduct a "year-end and New Year drunk driving crackdown" from December 1 this year through January next year.
Every Friday, simultaneous nationwide crackdowns will be conducted, and each provincial police agency will carry out at least two coordinated crackdowns per week. In addition to these coordinated operations, local police will also conduct checks during morning commutes and lunchtime hours to prevent drunk driving due to hangovers or drinking with meals. The locations for these crackdowns will be changed unexpectedly to maximize effectiveness.
An official from the National Police Agency stated, "If an accident occurs due to drunk driving, offenders will face aggravated punishment under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes for dangerous driving resulting in death or injury, and vehicles of habitual drunk drivers will be confiscated. We strongly urge everyone not to drive under the influence amid the festive atmosphere of the year-end and New Year season."
