The Ui-Banghak Light Rail Transit project involves constructing three new stations along a total length of 3.93 kilometers, connecting Solbat Park Station to Line 1’s Banghak Station, with a total project cost of 469 billion won. Initially promoted as a private investment project, it was converted to a public finance project in 2020, which led to difficulties in the bidding process. Thanks to the efforts of the city and the district, a design and construction contract was signed with the HL D&I Halla Consortium, allowing the project to enter the groundbreaking stage after 17 years.
The project aims for completion in 2032, with priority construction and impact assessment procedures scheduled to proceed until September next year. Once opened, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time between downtown Seoul and northern Gyeonggi Province and have a positive impact on the local economy, including revitalizing the commercial district around Banghak Station.
More than 300 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony, including Oh Eonseok, Mayor of Dobong District, Oh Sehoon, Mayor of Seoul, members of the National Assembly, city and district council members, and local residents. Mayor Oh Eonseok stated, “The Ui-Banghak Light Rail Transit will mark the end of transportation blind spots in areas with poor transit access, such as Banghak-dong and Ssangmun-dong,” and added, “We will work closely with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to ensure the smooth progress of construction.”
