Speculation on Busan Mayoral Run: Cho Kuk Says "Kim Youngsam's Politics Is the DNA of the National Innovation Party"

"Not Even a Single Resemblance to the People Power Party"

Former Emergency Committee Chairman Cho Kuk emphasized, "The National Innovation Party will carry on the reformist spirit of President Kim Youngsam," adding, "'Kim Youngsam's politics' is the DNA of the National Innovation Party." In the local political scene, there is cautious speculation that Cho may run for mayor of Busan next year.

On the 22nd, Cho posted on his Facebook page an article titled "The 10th Anniversary of Former President Kim's Passing." He continued, "Former President Kim ended the era of military dictatorship and ushered in the era of civilian government. By restoring the history of the 4·19 Revolution and the Gwangju Democratization Movement, he placed the truth of democracy in the official records of the nation," he said.

He went on to say, "Through (Kim Youngsam's) efforts to set history straight, we are able to enjoy a stronger democracy today. His decisive actions, such as eradicating Hanahoe, implementing the real-name financial system, and introducing the public officials' property registration system, established a new framework for the Republic of Korea."

He further criticized, "The politics of Kim Youngsam, who fought against dictatorship, coups, and injustice, bears not a single resemblance to the People Power Party, which is now protecting the ringleaders of insurrection and joining hands with far-right forces."

He also stated, "If there is even a minimum sense of conscience, the portrait should be taken down immediately," adding, "Continuing to display the portrait is an act of disrespect toward President Kim Youngsam and the people. I hope the party will become one that knows shame."

Cho concluded, "The National Innovation Party will continue to move forward, following in the footsteps left by former President Kim."

Meanwhile, Jang Donghyuk, leader of the People Power Party, said at the memorial ceremony for the 10th anniversary of Kim Youngsam's passing held the previous day, "The liberal democracy that President Kim risked his life to protect is facing a serious challenge," adding, "Just as he said, 'Even if you twist a chicken's neck, the dawn will come,' we will never succumb to any oppression or adversity. We will defend the liberal democracy of the Republic of Korea."

On the 22nd, a memorial ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of President Kim Youngsam's passing was held in Daegye Village, Jangmok-myeon, Geoje City, South Gyeongsang Province, his hometown. About 200 people, including Geoje Mayor Byun Kwangyong, National Assembly member Seo Iljun, and local citizens, attended the ceremony held at the square in front of the Kim Youngsam Presidential Records Exhibition Hall next to his birthplace. Attendees reflected on the achievements and spirit of the former president through memorial speeches and performances.
