The police are once again launching surprise crackdowns on drunk driving along major boulevards near key subway stations in Seoul.
On November 21, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it would mobilize all available traffic personnel to intensively crack down on drunk driving along major boulevards near key subway stations.
The police determined that the drunk driving checkpoints conducted at night on November 7-at locations such as Heunginjimun, where a Japanese tourist was involved in a drunk driving accident, and near Gangnam Station-were highly effective in preventing drunk driving. In fact, as of November this year, the daily average number of drunk driving accidents is 3.6, which is a 12.2% decrease compared to the daily average of 4.1 over the previous ten months.
Through these surprise inspections, the police aim to raise public awareness that "drunk driving can be cracked down on anywhere," thereby enhancing the effectiveness of accident prevention.
Park Jeongbo, Commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, stated, "Our primary goal is not only to crack down on drunk drivers, but also to convey the police's strong commitment to eradicating drunk driving, thereby preventing such incidents and fostering a safe traffic culture among citizens."
