Ministry of the Interior and Safety Releases "Public Service Discipline Inspection Report"
A large number of local government officials have been caught for falsely reporting overtime hours and improperly receiving allowances.
According to the 'Public Service Discipline Inspection Report' released by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on November 20, the ministry uncovered cases in some local governments where officials falsely recorded overtime work hours and improperly received allowances.
This inspection was conducted nationwide on local governments from December 23 of last year to January 24 of this year. As a result, a total of 14 cases involving 32 individuals were found to have committed illegal or improper acts.
The most frequently detected violation was officials recording overtime hours without actually working, in order to receive allowances.
For example, an official at level 6 at Seongdong District Office in Seoul, referred to as "A," would arrive before 8 a.m. on weekdays, record overtime hours, then leave for personal errands such as taking their child to school, and return later to record regular work hours. Through this method, the official falsely recorded a total of 86 hours and improperly received 1.1 million won.
Similarly, another level 7 official at the same district office, referred to as "B," falsely recorded a total of 98 hours and received 1.06 million won in overtime allowances.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety stated that regardless of personal circumstances, it is clear that these officials gained improper benefits through false reporting. The ministry has requested the relevant local governments to impose severe disciplinary action, recover the improperly received amounts, and collect an additional five times the received amount from the officials involved.
