Most Injured Passengers Discharged After Ferry Runs Aground on Uninhabited Island

The large car ferry passenger ship Queen Zenobia 2 ran aground on an uninhabited island in Sinan County, South Jeolla Province, and it has been confirmed that the majority of injured passengers have been safely discharged from the hospital.

According to South Jeolla Province and Mokpo City on November 20, out of the 267 people (246 passengers and 21 crew members) aboard the Queen Zenobia 2, which ran aground on Jokdo (an uninhabited island) in Sinan County the previous day, 30 were hospitalized and received treatment.

Of these, 26 people who complained of dizziness and headaches were found to have no abnormal findings and were discharged, spending the night at home or at nearby accommodations.

The remaining four people who received hospital treatment were not classified as seriously injured, but showed symptoms such as concussion, contusion of the buttocks, and lumbar sprain, so they decided to continue inpatient treatment.

Initially, the number of injured was tallied at 27 as of early this morning, but administrative authorities reviewed the hospital transfer lists again and confirmed that three passengers had visited the hospital on their own, raising the total to 30.

Among the injured was one pregnant woman, who was discharged after a fetal movement test at a nearby obstetrics clinic found no abnormal findings.

Of the 216 passengers who were in relatively good condition and did not receive hospital treatment, 143 stayed at two hotels in Mokpo, while the remaining 73 returned home.

An official from Mokpo City said, "We are relieved that most of the passengers were not seriously injured and were able to return home," adding, "The remaining hospitalized patients are also classified as having minor injuries and are receiving stable treatment."

The Queen Zenobia 2 departed from Jeju and was en route to Mokpo when, at around 4:45 p.m. the previous day, about half of its hull ran aground on Jokdo. All passengers were rescued by Coast Guard vessels within about three hours of the accident, and the Coast Guard is continuing its investigation into the cause of the incident.
