Gwangju AI Integration Complex Emerges as Demonstration Hub for Large Driving Simulator

Mobility Industry-Academia-Research TECH Seminar Held
Participation from Hyundai Motor Company, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and Others

The large driving simulator established at the Gwangju Cheomdan 3rd District AI Integration Complex is emerging as a key testbed for verifying autonomous driving and mobility technologies, drawing significant attention from industry, academia, and research institutions.


On November 20, the Artificial Intelligence Industry Convergence Project Group announced that it had held the "Large Driving Simulator TECH Seminar" at the AI Integration Complex Conference Hall the previous day, sharing virtual environment-based driving validation and integrated autonomous driving system technologies. The seminar was organized to promote the use of Gwangju's simulator equipment as a demonstration platform for autonomous vehicles and traffic safety.

The event saw the participation of key companies, research institutes, and universities, including Hyundai Motor Company, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), and Korea Automotive Technology Institute. The presentation sessions featured the latest technologies, such as: "Real-Virtual Integrated Verification and AI Response" by Byun Deoksoo, Executive Director at Innosimulation; "Simulator Utilization Plans for Forensic Accident Analysis" by Kim Jonghyuk, Director at the National Forensic Service; and "Simulator-Based Integrated Verification Technology for Autonomous Driving Systems" by Professor Kim Moonsik of Kongju National University.


During the demonstration program, participants directly experienced the large driving simulators (DILS and VILS), simulating autonomous driving scenarios under conditions similar to real roads. The equipment enables comprehensive testing, including AI-based driving data acquisition, performance verification, and scenario-based safety assessments.

The driving simulator consists of three types: DILS, which allows drivers to board and experience virtual driving; VILS, which uses actual vehicles; and SILS, which is based on virtual environment software. Organizations such as the Korea Automotive Technology Institute are considering ways to utilize this equipment for technology demonstration and validation. Companies located in Gwangju are eligible for a 30% discount on usage fees.


Oh Sangjin, Head of the Artificial Intelligence Industry Convergence Project Group, stated, "Performance and safety verification under various conditions is essential for the commercialization of autonomous driving technologies. We will strengthen collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions, based on the driving simulator at the Gwangju AI Integration Complex, to help vitalize the autonomous driving industry ecosystem."
