Gochang County Conducts 'Human Infection Prevention Training and Simulation Drill' in Preparation for AI Outbreak

On November 18, the Gochang County Public Health Center in North Jeolla Province conducted education on the prevention of avian influenza (AI) human infection and a simulation drill in the large conference room on the second floor of the health center.

Gochang County Conducts 'Human Infection Prevention Training and Simulation Drill' in Preparation for AI Outbreak Gochang County Public Health Center conducted AI human infection prevention education and a simulation drill on the 18th at the large conference room on the 2nd floor of the health center in preparation for the outbreak of avian influenza (AI). According to the public health center on November 19, highly pathogenic avian influenza continues to be detected in domestic and international poultry and wild birds. In response, the center carried out preventive education to block community transmission, as well as a simulation drill to protect high-risk groups and secure initial response capabilities in the event of an outbreak.

The training focused on both the basic information-such as an overview of AI human infection, transmission routes, and major symptoms-and the management procedures for high-risk groups.

In particular, the program provided detailed guidance for farm workers at AI outbreak sites, culling participants, and response personnel. Topics included seasonal influenza vaccination, criteria for participation, procedures for donning and doffing personal protective equipment, and protocols for responding to symptom onset.

The latest guidelines were also shared, highlighting the change in the criteria for antiviral administration from "mass administration to asymptomatic individuals" to "administration focused on symptomatic individuals," thereby improving the effectiveness of on-site response.

During the simulation drill following the training, participants repeatedly practiced donning and doffing Level-D personal protective suits to master contamination prevention procedures and strengthen both safety and infection control capabilities in the field.

Yu Byungsoo, Director of the Public Health Center, stated, "Although the risk of human-to-human transmission of AI is low, infection can lead to severe illness, making prevention and management for high-risk groups especially important. Through this training and simulation drill, we will further strengthen our on-site response system and protect residents' safety through thorough surveillance and management to block community transmission."
