"Privacy Invasion or Safe Journey Home?"... KakaoTalk's New Feature Sparks Another Heated Debate KakaoMap's newly updated location sharing service. KakaoMap

Kakao's new update has once again become a hot topic. The recently added "Friend Location" feature is drawing heated reactions from users. Some support the feature, saying it allows them to check the whereabouts of young children or elderly parents for peace of mind and provides detailed directions. However, others oppose it, citing concerns that it could be misused as a surveillance tool and infringe on privacy.

On November 12, Kakao added the "Friend Location" feature, which allows KakaoTalk friends to check each other's location on KakaoMap without time restrictions, provided both parties consent.

To use the feature, enter the KakaoTalk chatroom of the friend you want to share your location with, tap the "+" menu, and select the Friend Location option. The feature activates when the other person also agrees to share their location. In addition to the location, users can see detailed information such as movement speed and direction. The default usage time is one hour, but it can be extended up to six hours at a time. If you want to stop sharing, you can end it anytime by pressing the exit button.

Kakao explained, "Without a complicated sign-up process, you can check each other's location on the map using the profiles and nicknames you already use in the chatroom," adding, "Since you can continue sharing for as long as you want without a time limit, you can keep an eye on your loved ones' way home or check your friends' locations."

However, user opinions are divided. Some respond positively, noting that it enables quick and safe guidance for young children returning home or family members who have trouble finding their way. Others are concerned that it could lead to excessive monitoring among family members or infringe on privacy.

One user pointed out, "If they had thought about why free location-sharing apps lost popularity, they might not have released this update. The intention is good, but they will have to accept some backlash."

Other users commented, "I will use it when my husband comes home late or if I feel suspicious," and "It will probably cause more fights between couples."
