Jung-gu has the largest number of traditional markets and shopping districts among Seoul's autonomous districts. Since 2019, it has operated a dedicated department for traditional markets, establishing a tailored support system. The district has pursued multifaceted policies, including the establishment of a commercial district development center, design innovation, facility modernization, live commerce support, and commercial district brand development.

In particular, the Seoul Jung-gu Traditional Market Commercial District Development Center, the first of its kind in the country, serves as a collaborative platform connecting administration and merchants, providing on-site support such as merchant education, marketing assistance, and event planning.

Traditional market modernization is also actively underway, including the creation of the Namdaemun Market Global Luxury Market and the design innovation project at Sinjungang Market. In addition, digital sales channel support based on live commerce has enabled some merchants to expand into overseas online malls.

The district also secured 762 million won in external funding to improve safety, installing 32 underground fire hydrant boxes in traditional markets and enhancing the overall safety environment.

Kim Gilseong, Mayor of Jung-gu, stated, "This award is the result of merchants, residents, and experts coming together to drive innovation and revitalize commercial districts in Jung-gu. We will make Jung-gu's traditional markets a place where everyone wants to visit and stay."
