Truck Driver Who Caused Bucheon Traditional Market Crash Drove 132 Meters... Arrest Warrant Requested

It has been determined that Mr. A, a 67-year-old truck driver who caused a crash at a traditional market in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, resulting in two deaths and 19 injuries, drove for 132 meters during the incident.

According to the Ojeong Police Station in Bucheon on November 14, Mr. A drove a 1-ton truck into Jeil Market in Wonjong-dong, Ojeong-gu, Bucheon City at 10:54 a.m. the previous day. Investigations revealed that Mr. A’s truck reversed 1 to 2 meters just before the crash, then accelerated forward for 132 meters, striking victims and market stalls along the way.

Previously, fire authorities stated that the truck reversed for 28 meters and then drove forward for 150 meters, but the police corrected this after direct measurement showed different distances.

Among the 21 people killed or injured in the accident, only two were market vendors, while the rest were customers. Most of the injured are reported to be in their 50s to 70s.

On this day, the police applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A on charges of causing death and injury under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents.

The police believe that the accident was most likely caused by Mr. A’s pedal misapplication, rather than sudden unintended acceleration. They have requested the Road Traffic Authority and the National Forensic Service to analyze the accident data recorder (EDR) and determine the cause of the accident.

Meanwhile, Mr. A is known to have underlying health conditions, including Moyamoya disease, a cerebrovascular disorder. During police questioning, Mr. A claimed, “I am taking medication for treatment, but the condition has nothing to do with driving and does not affect my ability to drive in any way.”
