Muju County Operates "Oral Health Promotion Class for Seniors"

Visiting 10 Senior Centers and More Until December 26

Muju County in North Jeolla Province will operate the "Oral Health Promotion Class for Seniors" until December 26.

According to the county on November 14, the program was launched to help elderly residents manage their oral health. Dentists and dental hygienists from the Muju County Medical Center will visit 10 local senior centers as well as the county nursing hospital (targeting both inpatients and care staff).

The county will provide education on proper denture care, toothbrushing techniques, and mouth exercises to prevent dry mouth at the oral health class. In addition, fluoride varnish will be applied to teeth to prevent tooth sensitivity, with the aim of reducing the prevalence of oral diseases among seniors.

Sunhwa, Head of Medical Support at Muju County Medical Center, stated, "We are actively identifying candidates for the elderly denture and scaling programs through a variety of oral health education sessions and individual consultations," adding, "Since oral health significantly affects not only quality of life but also life expectancy, we will do our utmost to focus on preventive care."

In the first half of the year, the county also provided oral health education to 110 people at 10 senior centers in towns and villages, including Mupung Singi Senior Center, and applied fluoride varnish to 39 individuals.

Meanwhile, the Muju County Medical Center is running a "Scaling Program by Group" (for seniors aged 65 and older, registered smokers, and registered pregnant women) to prevent oral diseases among residents. The center is also carrying out a denture program for seniors (for those aged 65 and older who are basic livelihood security recipients or eligible for reduced out-of-pocket expenses).
