A Festival Blending Tradition and Modernity Held at Jangtonggyo Area
Jongno-gu in Seoul (Mayor Chung Moonhun) will host the “2025 Yukujeon Festival Six Sense Festa” on November 15, starting at 1:00 p.m., at the Jangtonggyo area of Cheonggyecheon (Youth Street in Gwanchul-dong).
“Yukujeon” refers to six shops in the Joseon Dynasty that held exclusive rights to supply goods to the state: Jijeon (hanji paper), Eomuljeon (seafood), Pojeon (hemp cloth), Seonjeon (silk), Myeonpojeon (cotton cloth), and Myeonjujeon (fine silk). Jongno-gu has reinterpreted the historical and symbolic significance of Yukujeon in a modern context, transforming it into an experiential festival designed to revitalize the Jongno-Cheonggye Tourism Special Zone and provide enjoyment for both residents and visitors.
This year’s festival is themed around the “six senses” and will feature various sections, including a performance stage, a traditional Yukujeon zone, a modern Yukujeon zone, and an event zone. The performance stage will host K-pop cover performances, magic shows, and popular music acts, while the traditional Yukujeon zone will recreate historic markets such as Seonjeon and Myeonpojeon in a modern exhibition format.
The modern Yukujeon zone will see Cheonggyecheon merchants-including those from medical equipment stores, jewelry shops, aquariums, and stationery and toy stores-operating sales and promotional booths as well as food trucks. A variety of hands-on programs will also be available, such as trying on traditional wedding attire, traditional games (ttakji, Gongginori, jegichagi, tuho), face painting, paper hat making, and silk reeling with silkworm cocoons.
In the event zone, artificial snow will create a “first snow street,” and photo zones will be set up for visitors to capture memories. By verifying the “#GwanchuldongYouthStreet” hashtag or participating with likes and comments on Jongno-gu’s official social media, visitors can take sticker photos at the on-site photo booth.
On the day of the event, vehicle traffic will be completely restricted along the 450-meter stretch from Samilgyo to Gwanggyo from 5:00 p.m. until midnight. The district will deploy traffic personnel to the site and encourages visitors to use public transportation.
Mayor Chung Moonhun of Jongno-gu stated, “We will continue to seek the development of the Jongno-Cheonggye Tourism Special Zone by adding creative ideas and new content to the value of tradition,” adding, “I hope everyone enjoys the Yukujeon Festival, where the history and modern sensibilities of Jongno come together.”
