Foundation Laid for Construction of Eco-Friendly Resource Recovery Facility
Yeosu City, South Jeolla Province, announced that the '2030 Resource Recovery Facility Construction Project' was finally confirmed on November 11 as an exemption from the preliminary feasibility study (pre-feasibility study) after review by the Ministry of Economy and Finance's Fiscal Project Evaluation Committee.
With this exemption from the pre-feasibility study, Yeosu City has established a foundation to proactively respond to the complete ban on direct landfilling of municipal solid waste by 2030 and to actively promote the construction of an eco-friendly resource recovery facility to replace aging waste treatment facilities.

The city has been preparing for the project in phases since 2021 and plans to accelerate efforts to establish a stable municipal waste management system, leveraging this recent selection as a momentum.
Currently, most of the equipment at the Yeosu City urban waste comprehensive treatment facility has become outdated since its operation began in 2010, resulting in reduced efficiency of the facilities, including a 100-ton-per-day incineration facility, a 90-ton-per-day food waste treatment facility, a 55-ton-per-day biogas facility, and a 30-ton-per-day recycling sorting facility.
Going forward, the city plans to determine the appropriate project scale, budget, and implementation method through a proposal eligibility review by the Public and Private Infrastructure Investment Management Center, and will promptly proceed with subsequent administrative procedures such as the local finance investment review, aiming for completion by 2030.
The new resource recovery facility will be developed as a comprehensive waste treatment facility with a 350-ton-per-day incineration facility, a 150-ton-per-day food waste treatment facility (integrated biogas facility), and a 30-ton-per-day recycling sorting facility.
A city official stated, "This exemption from the preliminary feasibility study will be an important turning point in innovating Yeosu City's resource circulation system," adding, "We will establish an eco-friendly integrated resource recovery facility that takes into account both environmental performance and community acceptance."
