New Village Project in the Mulgeum District Kicks Off with Resident Briefing Session
Improving Residential Environment: Parking Expansion, Community Center, and Housing Renovation
A wave of change has begun to sweep through the old downtown area of Mulgeum-eup in Yangsan City, Gyeongsangnam-do.
On November 5, Yangsan City held a resident briefing session for the New Village Project in the Mulgeum District at the Mulgeum-eup Administrative Welfare Center, marking the first step toward revitalizing the deteriorated residential environment together with local residents. The total project cost amounts to 35.2 billion won.
Approximately 80 residents from the eastern and western villages of Mulgeum-eup attended the briefing session, expressing their support for the project's plans and vision, and sharing their anticipation that "our village will change."
The eastern and western villages, which were once the heart of Mulgeum-eup, became neglected after the development of the Mulgeum New Town. Illegal parking along narrow alleys has made passage difficult and increased the risk of accidents, while decades-old houses have caused growing inconvenience for residents due to water leaks and deteriorating exterior walls.
To address these issues, Yangsan City was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s New Village Leading Project in December last year, securing a total of 35.2 billion won. The city will significantly expand public parking lots to alleviate parking shortages and construct the new Mulgeum Community Center as a space for resident interaction. The community center will include a cultural classroom for residents, a village library, and sports facilities for daily use.
In addition, the city will provide home repair support for aging houses to address water leaks, drafts, and exterior wall repairs, and will help residents build new homes through autonomous housing improvement assistance. Efforts will also be made to create a safer village and expand infrastructure and convenience facilities.
An official from Yangsan City stated, "Active participation from residents is key to the project's success," adding, "We will continue to communicate and cooperate closely with residents."
Son Jaehyun, Director of the Yangsan City Urban Regeneration Support Center, emphasized, "We will preserve the identity of the old downtown area of Mulgeum while improving it into a modern living environment. By opening the Mulgeum District New Village Maintenance Support Center near the project site, we will implement the project in close proximity to residents, and through the operation of a village management team, we will establish a sustainable management system even after the project is completed."
