Special Prosecutor Adds New Criminal Charges Following Additional Searches and Seizures
The court hearing to determine whether former Justice Minister Park Sungjae will be arrested is scheduled for November 13.
The Seoul Central District Court announced on November 11 that a pre-arrest interrogation (warrant review) for former Minister Park will be held at 10:10 a.m. on November 13, presided over by Judge Nam Sejin, who is in charge of warrants.
On the same day, the special prosecutor's team led by Cho Eunseok, which is investigating the insurrection case, requested an arrest warrant for former Minister Park on charges of engaging in key duties related to insurrection and abuse of authority by obstructing the exercise of rights. Former Minister Park is accused of participating in former President Yoon's insurrection crimes by convening meetings of directors and bureau chiefs at the Ministry of Justice after the declaration of martial law, ordering reviews for dispatching prosecutors to the joint investigation headquarters, checking the capacity of correctional facilities, and instructing staff in charge of travel bans to report to work.
The special prosecutor's team also requested an arrest warrant for former Minister Park on October 9, applying the same charges of engaging in key duties related to insurrection and abuse of authority by obstructing the exercise of rights. However, at that time, the court dismissed the request, stating that there was room for dispute regarding the extent of Park's awareness of illegality and the unlawfulness of the actions he took.
Following the dismissal of the warrant, the special prosecutor's team reapplied for the warrant, adding new criminal charges based on facts confirmed through additional evidence obtained from further searches and seizures.
