An Island for Inland Gwangmyeong... 'Island of Light' Proclamation Held on Sinan's Halmi Island

Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province, an inland city, is located just 10 kilometers in a straight line from Wolgot Port on the west coast, the nearest seaside point from its city boundary. Now, Gwangmyeong City has its own 'island.'

On November 10, a proclamation ceremony for the 'Island of Light' and an unveiling of a symbolic sculpture were held on Halmi Island in Jaeun-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do. The event commemorated Sinan County, which formed a partnership with Gwangmyeong City in April of last year, officially designating Halmi Island as an honorary island of Gwangmyeong City and installing a symbolic sculpture.

The ceremony was attended by Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, Lee Jiseok, Chairman of the Gwangmyeong City Council, Kim Daein, Acting Mayor of Sinan County, Lee Sangjoo, Chairman of the Sinan County Council, as well as officials from both local governments, local residents, and more than 100 Gwangmyeong citizens originally from Sinan County.

Both cities and counties agreed to use this event as an opportunity to expand cooperation in various fields, including administration, culture, and tourism, and to make their exchanges more concrete.

Gwangmyeong City plans to develop sustainable exchange programs that connect representative resources from each region, such as Gwangmyeong Cave, Sinan Purple Island, and sun-dried sea salt, aiming to create a model case of urban-rural coexistence.

Mayor Park stated, "The proclamation of Halmi Island as the 'Island of Light' will provide Gwangmyeong citizens with opportunities to experience the nature and culture of Sinan, laying the foundation for sustainable exchanges where both regions can share their unique charms. We will strive to ensure that the two cities become a model of mutual growth and solidarity by sharing their strengths and expanding cooperation in diverse fields."

Acting Mayor Kim also commented, "Gwangmyeong City and Sinan County, despite their different environments, share a commitment to people-centered administration. I hope Halmi Island will become a symbol of friendship and solidarity between the two cities and that we will become true partners in mutual growth."
