Lawyers in Gwangju and Jeonnam have called for a thorough investigation into the case of a Chonnam National University graduate student who died after reporting abuse of power.

The Gwangju Jeonnam Branch of the Lawyers for a Democratic Society (hereafter referred to as the Gwangju Jeonnam Branch) held a press conference at the back gate of Chonnam National University on the 6th, demanding, "Chonnam National University must promptly release the results of the fact-finding report and the human rights status survey."

They further stated, "Based on these results, measures must be established to prevent recurrence so that young graduate students can fully demonstrate their abilities without suffering abuse from professors," and emphasized, "Although it is belated, the professors responsible must be disciplined and actively cooperate with the investigation."

The bereaved family, who attended the press conference, said, "Applying for an industrial accident related to the case is not an act of making unreasonable demands, but a way to hold the responsible professors accountable," adding, "We will pursue all possible legal action until the law delivers its judgment and the university acknowledges its responsibility."

On July 13, a graduate student in their twenties was found dead in a dormitory at Chonnam National University.

This graduate student left a note describing the difficulties they suffered due to abuse of power by professors. The police, who have launched an investigation, have booked two professors as suspects and are currently investigating them.
