This visit included 13 members of the resident participation group, who shared in the background of Sokcho City's women-friendly city initiatives and examples of citizen participation group operations, fostering an opportunity for exchange and mutual growth between the two regions.
Sokcho City is promoting women-friendly city projects in various areas, including establishing a foundation for gender equality, expanding women's economic and social participation, enhancing community safety, and creating a family-friendly environment.
In particular, the city continues to implement policies that citizens can directly experience, such as ▲gender sensitivity capacity-building education ▲the women's job creation project "Jobara Sokcho!" ▲expansion of women’s safety zones and joint patrols between the public and private sectors ▲and the operation of "Family Love Playground," where families can participate together.
Since being designated as a women-friendly city in December 2022, Sokcho City has been strengthening its institutional foundations and pursuing substantial improvements. In 2024, the city was recognized for its policy achievements by receiving a ministerial commendation in the field of women-friendly city development, and this year, it has again received excellent evaluations and has been nominated as a candidate for another ministerial award, with results pending.
During the site visit, Sokcho City's implementation process and the role of the citizen participation group were introduced. The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province resident participation group had a meaningful time exploring the development direction for women-friendly cities in Jeju through Sokcho City's participatory policy examples.
An official from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province stated, "We will strengthen the capabilities of our resident participation group through Sokcho City's diverse on-site examples and expand interregional exchanges to jointly create a model for the development of women-friendly cities."
Sokcho City Mayor Lee Byeongseon said, "Sokcho's women-friendly policies are not government-led projects, but changes created together with citizens," adding, "We will continue to pursue citizen-centered policies so that gender equality becomes a natural part of daily life and Sokcho develops into a city where everyone is respected."
