"A Significant Achievement Made Possible by Solid Capabilities and Dedication"
The Yoo Young Academic Foundation announced on November 5 that Jeon Sooyong, President of the Literature Translation Institute of Korea, has been selected as the winner of the 19th Yoo Young Translation Award for her translation of the American writer Saul Bellow's novel "Humboldt's Gift."

The judging committee commented that "Humboldt's Gift" is "a major work in American literary history that, until now, had never been translated into Korean." They added, "Given the complexity and vastness of its structure, subject matter, behaviors, and ideas, this translation is a significant achievement that demonstrates the translator's solid capabilities and dedication."
President Jeon graduated from the Department of English Language and Literature at Ewha Womans University, completed her master's and doctoral programs in English literature at the University of Michigan in the United States, and served as a professor in the Department of English at Ewha Womans University. She has translated works such as "Celtic Myths and Legends" and "Crime Fiction," and was appointed as President of the Literature Translation Institute of Korea last year.
The Yoo Young Translation Award was established in 2007 by the family of the late Yoo Young, Honorary Professor of English at Yonsei University, to honor his achievements and contribute to the development of literary translation.
The prize money is 10 million won, and the award ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on November 13 at the Yonsei University Alumni Hall. Prior to the ceremony, the 10th Yoo Young Academic Foundation Translation Symposium will be held under the theme "Literary Translation in the Age of AI."
