The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (Minister: Yoon Hojoong) held a Local Allocation Tax Committee meeting on the 31st of last month, where it established support measures for basic local governments that had previously been excluded from assistance within the Radiological Emergency Planning Zones and finalized the method of financial support.

The ministry plans to provide ordinary allocation tax support equivalent to 100% of the amount distributed to other cities and counties within the same emergency planning zone. After a legislative notice of the enforcement rules on the 5th, the ministry aims to complete the revision within the year.

Although Samcheok City is located only 10 kilometers in a straight line from the Uljin Hanul Nuclear Power Plant, it has long been excluded from various compensation and support measures because it does not belong to the metropolitan government where the nuclear power plant is located.

Samcheok City, which is included in the Radiological Emergency Planning Zone but has been ineligible for support due to being in a different jurisdiction from the nuclear plant, as well as Yangsan in South Gyeongsang Province, Buan and Gochang in North Jeolla Province, will be eligible for ordinary allocation tax benefits starting next year.

A Samcheok City official stated, "Although we share the risks of the nuclear power plant with Uljin County due to our proximity, Samcheok City has been unable to receive benefits simply because we belong to a different metropolitan administrative district. We are very pleased to finally receive appropriate support. We would like to thank the residents, city and provincial officials, and the Nuclear Power Plant Alliance Cities and Counties for their efforts. Moving forward, we will do our utmost to strengthen the safety and welfare of residents living near the nuclear power plant and to revitalize the local economy."
