Decision to Expand to 4 Rounds and 72 Holes Next Year
A Move to Secure World Ranking Points
Rahm and DeChambeau: "We Welcome LIV Golf's Decision"
LIV Golf will expand from the current 3-round format to a 4-round format starting next year.
On November 4 (local time), LIV Golf announced, "As the next step in the league's growth, all tournaments in the 2026 season will be played over 72 holes," adding, "This change reflects LIV Golf's global expansion aimed at providing more enjoyment for fans." Since its launch in 2022, LIV Golf has held all of its tournaments as 3-round, 54-hole events through this year.
LIV Golf, sponsored by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia, has not received world ranking points since its inception, with the 3-round format being cited as one of the reasons. Players affiliated with LIV Golf have struggled to maintain eligibility for major tournaments because they do not earn world ranking points.
Some players have participated in DP World Tour or Asian Tour events to acquire world ranking points. Currently, LIV Golf players are not allowed to compete in PGA Tour events. Jon Rahm of Spain, the star of LIV Golf, welcomed the decision, saying, "This decision is for both the league and the players," and added, "Expanding to 72 holes will enhance competition and provide an opportunity to further develop our skills at the highest level."
Bryson DeChambeau of the United States also expressed hope that this measure would allow LIV Golf to receive world ranking points, stating, "Everyone wants to see the world's best players compete in major tournaments." LIV Golf will open its season next February in Saudi Arabia.
