'Women-Friendly Cities' Led by Ministry of Gender Equality and Family: Gyeongsan and Uiseong Newly Designated, Expanding to Six Locations in North Gyeongsang Province

On November 4, North Gyeongsang Province announced that with two additional cities and counties newly designated as women-friendly cities in the "2025 Women-Friendly City Designation Review" hosted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the total number of women-friendly cities in the province has expanded to six, including the existing four.

Previously, North Gyeongsang Province had four women-friendly cities and counties: Pohang, Gyeongju, Gumi, and Chilgok. With this announcement, Chilgok County, whose five-year designation period had expired, has been re-designated as a women-friendly city, and Gyeongsan City and Uiseong County have been newly designated.

Chilgok County, which has been re-designated this time, was recognized for its achievements in leading women-friendly policies and contributing to the spread of a gender-equal culture in the local community during the previous designation period.

Additionally, Gyeongsan City and Uiseong County, newly designated, received high marks for their plans to create safe environments for women, expand care infrastructure, and increase women's participation in society, all tailored to local characteristics.

A women-friendly city aims to empower women, establish care and safety environments, and spread a culture of gender equality within the community. The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family designates such cities through an annual review process.

In particular, North Gyeongsang Province is expanding the creation of women-friendly cities to change the social climate regarding work-life balance and care environments, with the goal of overcoming low birth rates.

Starting in 2025, the province is promoting the "Gyeongbuk-Style Women-Friendly City Initiative" by discovering and supporting "women-friendly city regional specialized projects" tailored to local characteristics through public offerings, providing project consulting, and enabling cities and counties to implement women-friendly policies suited to their unique needs.

North Gyeongsang Province plans to use this designation as an opportunity to continue expanding women-friendly cities by supporting cities and counties preparing for designation and discovering additional candidate cities.

Um Taehyeon, Director of the Low Birth Rate Overcoming Headquarters of North Gyeongsang Province, said, "The expansion of women-friendly cities is an important turning point in creating a community where all residents can enjoy a safe and equal life." He added, "North Gyeongsang Province will continue to expand women-friendly cities, listen to voices on the ground, and actively pursue practical gender equality policies to build a community where women and men grow together."
