Fatal traffic accidents occurred consecutively in the Jeonnam region. In Yeongam, a ready-mix concrete truck driver who struck and killed an elderly man in his 80s and then fled the scene was apprehended, and separate fatal accidents also took place in Naju, Hampyeong, and Jangseong.
On November 4, the Yeongam Police Station announced that it had urgently arrested Mr. A (58), the driver of the ready-mix concrete mixer truck, on charges of hit-and-run resulting in death under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. Mr. A is accused of striking and killing resident Mr. B, a man in his 80s who was taking a break while drying rice in an open lot in front of a village hall in Seohomyeon, Yeongam County, at around 10:17 a.m. the previous day, and leaving the scene without taking any action. The police apprehended Mr. A at a factory about two hours later. Mr. A reportedly stated that he was unaware an accident had occurred. The police have applied for an arrest warrant and are investigating whether Mr. A was aware of the accident.
At around 3:44 p.m. on the same day, a 25-ton dump truck collided consecutively with a feed transport vehicle and a car carrier near the Munpyeong 5 Tunnel on the Muan-Gwangju Expressway (toward Gwangju) in Munpyeong-myeon, Naju. The impact caused the 25-ton truck to be pushed backward, where it then collided with a following 17-ton truck. As a result of the accident, the driver of the feed truck, a man in his 50s, was killed, and Mr. A, the dump truck driver in his 60s, sustained serious injuries. Police believe the accident occurred due to inattentive driving in a section where traffic was congested because of construction, and they are investigating the exact circumstances.
Earlier, at around 9:23 a.m. on a road in Nasan-myeon, Hampyeong County, a compact car crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming motorcycle, resulting in the death of the motorcycle driver, a man in his 50s. Police have booked the compact car driver, a man in his 70s, on charges of causing death under the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling.
On the same day, at around 8:18 p.m. near the Maheung Intersection in Jinwon-myeon, Jangseong County, a man in his 60s who was riding a bicycle fell into a drainage ditch and was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest. Police are investigating the exact circumstances of each accident.
