Poor Napa Cabbage Harvest Due to Autumn Rains
Maintaining Prices Through New Farm Partnerships and Bulk Purchasing
20% Discounts on Peeled Garlic, Green Onions, Fresh Oysters, and Pork Belly
Emart announced on November 4 that it will hold the "2025 Kimchi-Making Festival" for a week from November 6 to 12, ahead of the peak kimchi-making season.
During the event, Emart will offer a 20% discount on napa cabbage (10 heads, 3 per pack) and radish (1 bundle, 5-6 per bundle), reducing the regular price of 7,480 won to 5,984 won for customers who accumulate Shinsegae Points. For each bundle purchased, customers will also receive 1,000 points in e-money, which can be used like cash in-store. The e-money can be used for 14 days starting from the day after purchase.
The "Cheonsu Radish" (7-9 per pack), known for its crunchy texture and favored for pickling, will be sold at 6,480 won with a 20% Shinsegae Points discount, and "Altari Radish" (1.5kg) will be available for 3,980 won. The e-money benefit does not apply to these items.
This year, the napa cabbage crop has not fared well. High temperatures during the transplanting period from late August to early September and autumn rains had a negative impact on crop growth. As a result, many cabbages are smaller than usual or have been lost to soft rot. In particular, the cabbage crop in the Gangneung area has been poor due to late rainfall.
Because of this, cabbage prices, which had been lower than last year until October, have risen sharply. Ahead of the kimchi-making season, prices have surpassed last year's levels and are now even higher. As of the end of September, the wholesale price of napa cabbage (10kg net bag) at Garak Market was 18% lower than the same period last year, but by the end of October, it had risen to 10,710 won, 23% higher than last year's 8,692 won.
Despite the rising prices of napa cabbage during the kimchi-making season, Emart will maintain last year's promotional prices. Emart buyers have worked tirelessly across the country to secure high-quality products from farms, resulting in the procurement of premium napa cabbage from Mungyeong, Asan, Gochang, Muan, and Haenam. By combining the event quantities for Emart, Traders, and Everyday, Emart has purchased 2,700 tons in bulk, further enhancing its price competitiveness.
Emart will also run promotions on a variety of kimchi-making ingredients. Peeled garlic from Changnyeong Upo (500g), fresh ginger (500g), green mustard, and red mustard (each 500g) will be sold at 3,827 won, 4,787 won, and 3,184 won, respectively, with a 20% Shinsegae Points discount off the regular prices of 4,784 won, 5,984 won, and 3,980 won.
In addition, large-sized green onions with soil (1kg), peeled green onions (200g), and large-sized peeled green onions (500g) will be available at 8,768 won, 4,320 won, and 8,640 won, respectively, with a 20% Shinsegae Points discount off the regular prices of 10,960 won, 5,400 won, and 10,800 won. Fresh oysters from the southern coast (250g), in high demand during kimchi-making season, will be sold at 7,984 won with a 20% Shinsegae Points discount off the regular price of 9,980 won, and "Tantan Pork Samgyeopsal and Pork Neck" will also be offered at a 20% discount.
Yoon Saemi, Emart's vegetable buyer, said, "This year, due to the poor napa cabbage crop, product quality and prices have fluctuated significantly, so we visited more production regions than usual and discovered new farms. We have prepared so that customers can get ready for kimchi-making at Emart stores with stable prices and quality."
