Yangcheon District Completely Replaces Soundproof Walls Around Mokil Middle and Sinmok High Schools After 27 Years

Safety and Cityscape Improved with Transparent Tempered Glass

Yangcheon District in Seoul (District Mayor Lee Kijae) announced on November 3 that it has completely replaced the old soundproof walls around Mokil Middle School and Sinmok High School.

The soundproof walls in this section had been installed in 1997, and after more than 27 years, panel corrosion and deformation had marred the cityscape and caused inconvenience for pedestrians. The area is a major route for hundreds of students commuting to and from school every day, making it urgent to secure a safe walking environment.

The district invested 450 million won in the project, which was carried out over seven months starting in April this year. The 6-meter-high, 220-meter-long opaque steel soundproof walls were replaced with transparent tempered glass, improving both pedestrian safety and the cityscape. The tempered glass is highly durable and effective at blocking noise, helping to protect the learning environment at nearby schools.

During the design phase, the project was reviewed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government Design Review Committee, and features such as brick-patterned tiles on the retaining wall were incorporated to harmonize with the surrounding environment in both color and form. Throughout construction, the district worked closely with officials from Mokil Middle School, Sinmok High School, and other nearby schools to minimize inconvenience for students commuting to school, and installed pedestrian safety fences and informational banners in advance.

The sidewalk was also widened as part of this renovation project. The district removed unsightly flower beds and reinstalled sidewalk blocks, expanding the sidewalk by about one meter.

Lee Kijae, Mayor of Yangcheon District, said, “There have been significant concerns about student safety due to the old soundproof walls and narrow sidewalks. We hope this renovation will provide a clean and safe walking path, making the commute to and from school more pleasant.”
