Attending the Democratic Party’s Jeonnam Provincial Party Temporary Members’ Convention on November 2
“We Will Relinquish Vested Interests and Hold a Fair Primary”
Jeong Cheongrae, Leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, has pledged a fair and transparent primary ahead of next June's local elections, declaring, "I will usher in an era of party member sovereignty."
In his remarks at the Democratic Party's Jeonnam Provincial Party temporary members' convention held in Naju, South Jeolla Province, on November 2, Jeong stated, "In next year's local elections, which can be described as overcoming a second national crisis, we will hold the fairest and most transparent democratic primary that truly reflects the will of our party members."
He continued, "If the party leadership holds any vested interests, we will relinquish them and return those privileges to our members. We will eliminate unfair cut-offs. Anyone without disqualifying reasons will be allowed to participate in the primary."
Jeong emphasized, "Through a primary where 100% of the power belongs to the party members-completely different from the past-we will ensure that no one is treated unfairly, and that everyone can accept the results. Through this, we will secure victory in the local elections."
He also recalled a campaign event in Honam during the last presidential election, saying, "An elderly woman over 80 thanked me for defeating Yoon Suk-yeol and then asked, 'Will you impeach Cho Hui-dae, and will you conduct a special investigation?' I was deeply moved by her remarkable political awareness."
Jeong added, "Every time I come to Honam, the root and heart of Korean democracy, I learn something new. If President Lee Jaemyung is remembered as the president who ushered in an era of national sovereignty, I hope to be remembered as the leader who opened the era of party member sovereignty."
