Considering Lack of Remorse and Other Factors
The prosecution has sought the death penalty for Yoon Jungwoo (48), who is accused of murdering a woman he had been stalking with a weapon and then fleeing the scene.
According to Yonhap News Agency on October 30, the Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office, Western Branch, requested the maximum legal sentence-the death penalty-for Yoon, who was indicted and detained on charges including retaliatory murder. Yoon is on trial for allegedly climbing a gas pipe to break into the sixth-floor apartment of the victim in Dalseo District, Daegu, at around 3:30 a.m. on June 10, and then killing the woman in her 50s, whom he had been stalking, with a weapon before fleeing the scene.
The prosecution determined that Yoon harbored resentment after the victim requested to end their relationship, and continued to threaten and stalk her. They concluded that he committed the crime in a premeditated manner as retaliation for being reported to the authorities. The prosecution explained that they sought the death penalty after comprehensively considering Yoon’s partial denial of the crime, his lack of remorse, and the strong demand for severe punishment from the victim’s family.
A prosecution official stated, “We will do our utmost to ensure the defendant receives punishment commensurate with his crime,” adding, “We will also make every effort to respond to stalking in order to prevent similar crimes in the future.”
