Over 10 Tenants File Complaints
Unable to Recover Deposits of About 100 Million Won Each
An incumbent prosecutor's investigator who owns more than 70 officetels and other properties in the Hwaseong area of Gyeonggi Province is under police investigation on suspicion of jeonse fraud.
According to Yonhap News Agency on October 30, the Hwaseong Dongtan Police Station in Gyeonggi Province received a complaint from tenants at the end of last month, requesting an investigation of landlord A on charges of fraud, and has launched an investigation. A is reportedly an incumbent prosecutor's investigator affiliated with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office. So far, more than 10 tenants have filed complaints. Despite the expiration of their jeonse contracts, each tenant has been unable to recover their deposit of around 100 million won.
A is believed to own more than 70 officetels and other properties in the Hwaseong area, so the scale of damages may increase depending on the expiration dates of each tenant's contract. Many of the victims are young professionals who commute to the Samsung Electronics campus near Dongtan New Town. It is reported that, after being unable to contact A even after their jeonse contracts expired, they decided to pursue legal action. The police have received contract-related documents from each complainant and are analyzing the specific amount of damages and other details.
Meanwhile, A is currently believed to be staying overseas. However, it is known that this is not an official business trip or any work-related travel. The police are proceeding with related procedures, including requesting the Ministry of Justice to notify them upon A's entry into the country.
