Selected for the Ministry of Land's "Barrier-Free (BF) Certification Contest"
Secured 310 million won in national funding; aiming for completion and BF certification by July next year
Enhancing accessibility for transportation-vulnerable groups and comprehensive terminal renovations inside and out
On October 29, the Chuncheon Intercity Bus Terminal in Gangwon Province was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's "Barrier-Free (BF) Certification Contest for Passenger Bus Terminals," and will undertake a comprehensive renovation of its aging facilities for the first time in 18 years.
Having been selected for the contest, Chuncheon City secured 310 million won in national funding out of a total project budget of 690 million won. The city plans to transform the terminal into a convenient and safe transportation hub for both residents and visitors. Construction is set to begin in January next year after the subsidy is granted, with completion and BF certification targeted for July of the same year.
Located at 2341 Gyeongchun-ro, Onui-dong, the Chuncheon Intercity Bus Terminal is a two-story building with one basement floor, completed in 2007. It is a key transportation facility in the region, serving more than 9,000 passengers daily and operating 291 trips on 41 routes.
Through this project, the terminal will undergo improvements both inside and out, including: replacement of automatic doors at the entrance, repair of wheelchair-accessible pathways and ramps, replacement of handrails for people with disabilities, upgrading of heating and cooling systems, installation of non-slip surfaces on emergency stairs, complete restroom remodeling, replacement of waiting area seating, and remodeling of the ticket office.
Accessibility for transportation-vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women will also be enhanced. The project will expand restrooms for people with disabilities, replace braille blocks and emergency evacuation guides, and install kiosks for people with disabilities, thereby establishing a barrier-free environment that meets BF certification standards.
Yook Donghan, Mayor of Chuncheon, stated, "The terminal is the gateway to our city and the first thing visitors encounter when they arrive in Chuncheon. With this national funding, we will create a comfortable and safe environment for all users, including those with transportation challenges."
