Theme: "The Thought and Literature of Songsa Ki Uman"
The Institute for Korean Classical Studies at Jeonju University will hold an academic conference on October 31 at Seongyeon Hall, Jinri-gwan, Jeonju University, to commemorate the completion of the English translation of "Song Sajip," the collected works of Songsa (Songsa) Ki Uman, a militia leader and prominent scholar from Honam during the late Joseon Dynasty.
According to Jeonju University on October 29, this conference is part of the collaborative translation project promoted by the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics over the past 30 years, and the theme is "The Thought and Literature of Songsa Ki Uman."
The Honam Regional Base Collaborative Translation Project Team (Research Director: Kim Gunwoo) at the Institute for Korean Classical Studies at Jeonju University has organized this event to share the results of the "Song Sajip" translation for the first time in a while, following previous conferences commemorating the completion of translations of "Jonjaejip" in 2013, "Mungokjip" in 2015, and "Nobongjip" in 2016.
The event will be moderated by Lee Juhyung, a researcher with the collaborative translation project team at Jeonju University, and will be chaired by Professor Byun Juseung, Director of the Institute for Korean Classical Studies. It will feature four thematic presentations, followed by a comprehensive discussion session.
The thematic presentations are as follows: ▲ Topic 1: "The Contemporary History of Songsa Ki Uman - Amid the Turbulent Overturn of Joseon History" (Professor Oh Hangnyeong, Jeonju University); ▲ Topic 2: "Songsa Ki Uman's Academic Networks and Activities - Focusing on the Nosa Lineage and the Continuity of Confucian Tradition" (Professor Park Hakrae, Kunsan National University); ▲ Topic 3: "The Shadow of Oepil - Ki Uman, Kim Hoon, and the Oepil Debate" (Professor Lee Hyangjun, Chonnam National University); ▲ Topic 4: "Research on the Biographies Left by Songsa Ki Uman" (Professor Choi Seongeun, Wonkwang University).
The comprehensive discussion will include members of the Jeonju University collaborative translation project team (Jeon Hyeongyun, Kang Jihye, Jang Seongdeok, and Yoo Youngbong), who directly participated in the translation of "Song Sajip."
The Jeonju University collaborative translation project team used the first edition of "Song Sajip," published in 1931, as the base text. They published 11 volumes in December 2020 and the remaining 7 volumes in December 2021, completing the full translation in a total of 18 volumes.
Ki Uman, who inherited the academic lineage of his grandfather Nosa (Nosa) Ki Jeongjin, is recognized as a leading scholar in the Honam region and a central figure in the anti-Japanese resistance movement. Despite his extensive body of work, research on Ki Uman has been limited. Therefore, the completion of this translation holds great significance, not only for biographical, ideological, and literary studies, but also as empirical material for developing regional historical and cultural content.
A representative from the collaborative translation project team stated, "We expect that the completion of the 'Song Sajip' translation and this commemorative academic conference will stimulate various academic discussions, including research on Ki Uman, one of Honam's spiritual leaders, as well as studies on the Confucian scholar network, intellectual history, and social history of the period."
Meanwhile, since May 2010, the Jeonju University collaborative translation project team has been translating previously untranslated Joseon Dynasty collected works with support from the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics, aiming to popularize classical literature and foster regional translation talent.
In December 2017, the team was designated as a "Major Regional Research Center" and has since translated and published nine Honam region collected works annually. To date, they have published translations of 69 collected works, and this year they are working on "Seongdamjip," "Yangwonyujip," "Unpyeongjip," and "Daminjip."
