Changwon Special City in South Gyeongsang Province is holding an exhibition of winning works from the “Native Language Shining with Calligraphy Contest,” organized to commemorate the 579th Hangul Day (October 9). This year marks the second edition of the contest, which saw 60 citizens submit a total of 74 calligraphy pieces. Among them, 21 works by citizens were selected for display, including the top prize-winning piece by Bae Younghee titled “Jeongjie Gaga Jeongguji Jijimi Jijiga Jireongdo Chaenggiga Huddak Naewarakai,” as well as three second-place winners and eleven merit award recipients. The top prize-winning work features words such as “jeongji” (kitchen), “jeongguji” (chives), and “jireong” (soy sauce), which are native terms traditionally used in the Changwon area, reflecting the region’s linguistic identity and warm everyday culture.
In addition to the exhibition, the city has compiled the winning works into a booklet (leaflet) titled “Native Language Shining with Calligraphy Contest,” which will be made available at the venue and distributed to the five district offices, allowing more citizens to appreciate and learn about the beauty of the local language.
Lee Dongho, Chief of Korean Language Affairs (Public Relations Officer), stated, “We organized the exhibition and the booklet not just as a one-time event, but to share the beauty of native words with citizens,” adding, “We hope this event will contribute to the discovery and spread of the regional language.”
Meanwhile, to celebrate Hangul Day, Changwon City selected seven departments through the “Outstanding Department for Proper Event Naming Contest,” which was held among all city departments and townships. From October to November, the city will also conduct a total of six sessions of “AI-Based Public Language Correction Education” at district offices in rotation.
