Basic Design Contract Signed with Fermi America for Four Large Nuclear Power Plants
Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced on October 26 that it has signed a basic design service contract with Fermi America, a U.S. private energy development company, to build four large nuclear power plants within a hybrid energy and artificial intelligence (AI) campus. This marks the first time a Korean company has secured a contract to carry out a large-scale nuclear power plant construction project in the United States.
The hybrid energy and AI campus is the world's largest private power grid complex, being developed by Fermi America on a 21.19 million square meter site on the outskirts of Amarillo, Texas. The project aims to establish an independent power supply infrastructure with a total capacity of 11GW, including four AP1000 large nuclear power plants (4GW), small modular reactors (SMRs, 2GW), gas combined cycle power plants (4GW), and solar power and battery energy storage systems (1GW). This infrastructure will be linked to an ultra-large hyperscale AI data center.
Under this contract, Hyundai Engineering & Construction will be responsible for the initial stage of nuclear power plant construction, including developing the site layout plan, reviewing cooling methods, and conducting basic design work such as budget and schedule estimation. Since signing an agreement in July, the companies have been discussing basic design and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) matters. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently reviewing the integrated licensing. The two sides plan to aim for an EPC contract in the first half of next year.
On October 24, Hanwoo Lee, CEO of Hyundai Engineering & Construction, met with Mesut Uzman, CEO of Fermi Nuclear, at the company's headquarters to sign the service contract. Afterwards, he traveled to Hong Kong to meet with Toby Neugebauer, CEO of Fermi America, to discuss further cooperation. Hyundai Engineering & Construction stated, "This achievement demonstrates our credibility as a trusted nuclear power partner in the global energy market. Based on the energy partnership between Korea and the United States, we will seek practical avenues for cooperation."
