Suncheon City was selected as No.1 in the Small and Strong City category of the "2025 Hankyoreh Regional Resilience Assessment."
At the awards ceremony held at the International Conference Hall of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul on the 23rd, Suncheon City was recognized for its competitiveness across all areas-environmental, economic, and social-and was selected as the top small and strong city among 120 basic local governments, excluding those under the Seoul metropolitan area and special or metropolitan cities.
The "Regional Resilience Assessment," newly announced this year by the Hankyoreh Economic and Social Research Institute, is an index that comprehensively measures a local government's ability to respond to external shocks and its potential for internal development.
Suncheon City has been driving a major industrial transformation by enhancing its local government capabilities through the Suncheonman International Garden Expo, attracting international events, and fostering future growth industries such as tourism, aerospace, and healing industries. In addition, Suncheon City received high marks for operating the first Dalbit Children's Hospital in Jeollanam-do and for advancing projects to improve residential conditions and expand essential healthcare for residents.
Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu of Suncheon said, "I hope Suncheon's experience, based on community spirit, will serve as a model for overcoming the era of local extinction."
