Accused of Violating the Broadcasting Act and Abusing Authority
The Special Committee on Media of the People Power Party has filed a police complaint against Choi Minhee, Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, accusing her of violating the Broadcasting Act and abusing her authority by ordering the head of MBC’s News Division to leave during a parliamentary audit.
On the 24th, Sohn Sujo, Media Spokesperson for the People Power Party, met with reporters in front of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and stated, “Demanding the removal of someone simply because they published an article unfavorable to oneself is an act of arrogance and rudeness.”
On the 20th, during a closed-door work report at the MBC parliamentary audit, Chairperson Choi pointed out what she saw as unfairness in coverage of the parliamentary audit’s disruption. In response, the head of MBC’s News Division replied that it was inappropriate to question individual news items, after which Chairperson Choi ordered his removal.
The MBC Journalists Association, the MBC branch of the National Union of Mediaworkers, and the Journalists Association of Korea have criticized Chairperson Choi, calling her actions an infringement on press independence.
