Kang Hodong, Chairman of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, announced that measures will be taken to combat voice phishing (telephone financial fraud) in response to concerns that local agricultural cooperatives have opened more fraudulent bank accounts than commercial banks.
At the National Assembly's Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock, Food, and Maritime Affairs Committee audit on the morning of October 24, Kang responded to People Power Party lawmaker Kang Myunggu's remarks that "there have been 1,783 cases of voice phishing at agricultural cooperatives, with significant financial losses. The number of people receiving preventive education is low, and there are also few staff members dedicated to responding to voice phishing." Kang stated, "We are providing education related to voice phishing and are making efforts to prevent such crimes. We will ensure to strengthen our efforts, including increasing personnel."
Kang Taeyoung, President of NongHyup Bank, also said, "There are 46 employees at the bank dedicated to monitoring voice phishing, and the annual budget is 600 million won, totaling 4 billion won over five years. We will allocate a larger budget and increase personnel to further strengthen voice phishing prevention."
