‘Car-Free Street’ to Be Operated on the Day of the Festival
Junggu District in Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gilseong) has completed the maintenance of the area surrounding Myeongbo Art Hall, where the main stage for the ‘2025 Yi Sun-sin Festival’ will be set up, ahead of the event on October 25.
The area around Myeongbo Art Hall is where ‘Yi Sun-sin Road’-which stretches from Euljiro 3-ga Station to Namsangol Hanok Village and is designated as Yi Sun-sin Honorary Road-intersects with Mareunnae-ro near the birthplace of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. This neighborhood is densely packed with printing and paper-related businesses and is known for its narrow alleys, roadside obstructions, and frequent motorcycle traffic, which have often caused inconvenience to pedestrians.
To ensure the smooth operation of the festival and the safety of visitors, Junggu has carried out intensive maintenance since September. The district conducted a thorough inspection of illegal street vendors, roadside obstructions, and unauthorized advertisements, encouraging voluntary compliance, and directly handled areas where these issues were not resolved. Outdated and illegal advertisements such as standing signboards and banners were removed, and enforcement was carried out against motorcycles, three-wheeled scooters, and abandoned bicycles. The exclusive motorcycle parking areas were cleaned and repainted, resulting in a much more pleasant environment.
Road and sewage facilities were also inspected. Damaged sidewalks, areas with subsidence or water accumulation were repaired, and illegally dumped trash and household waste were collected. Relevant departments and related agencies conducted joint inspections to ensure thorough festival preparations.
Notably, on the day of the festival, October 25, the section from the intersection in front of Hotel PJ to Myeongbo Art Hall, and from Myeongbo Art Hall to Euljiro 3-ga intersection, will be operated as a ‘car-free street.’ The district office requested cooperation from nearby merchants in advance, and the merchants expressed their active support for the initiative.
Kim Gilseong, Mayor of Junggu District, stated, “Junggu, the birthplace of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, has completed all preparations to host the ‘2025 Yi Sun-sin Festival.’ I hope that on October 25, citizens and tourists alike will enjoy history and culture in a clean and safe environment while experiencing the unique charm of Junggu.”
