President Lee Jaemyung has reportedly expressed his regret regarding the failure to attract the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computing Center to Gwangju, stating, "I apologize to the citizens of Gwangju." The Office of the President reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Gwangju into a city of future industries and instructed the preparation of alternatives such as expanding data centers and establishing AI research institutes.

Woo Sangho, Senior Secretary for Political Affairs to the President, held an emergency meeting the previous day at the National Assembly Members' Office Building with eight Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers from the Gwangju region, conveying the President's message. Woo explained, "The President was briefed on the failure to attract the National AI Computing Center to Gwangju and said, 'It is very unfortunate, and I apologize to the citizens of Gwangju. Go immediately and meet with the lawmakers from Gwangju.'"
He continued, "The President also said, 'My commitment to making Gwangju a city of future industries remains unchanged, and I will keep the promises made to Gwangju.' He further instructed the senior secretaries to devise measures for the development of future industries in Gwangju, including AI."
During the meeting, the lawmakers from Gwangju conveyed the citizens' disappointment over the failure to attract the National AI Computing Center and proposed alternatives such as a significant expansion of the national data center, the establishment of a national AI research institute, the creation of an AI demonstration center, and the development of a pilot city for AI mobility.
Woo stated, "I will report the sentiments of Gwangju citizens and the lawmakers' proposals to the President."
