KOSDAQ Also Holds Firm with Semiconductor-Led Gains
Boosted by Rebound in U.S. Markets
On October 24, both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ indices started the day with gains of around 1%. In the early session, the KOSPI even surpassed the 3,900 mark.
On this day, the KOSPI began regular trading at 3,893.23, up 1.24% from the previous day. Early in the session, it reached 3,903.81, setting a new all-time high for the KOSPI.
By investor type, individuals and institutions were net buyers in the early session, purchasing a net 1.95 billion won and 7.43 billion won, respectively. Foreign investors, on the other hand, were net sellers of 7.16 billion won.
Almost all sectors showed gains. The securities sector led the rise with a 3.29% increase, followed by electrical and electronics (2.34%), machinery and equipment (1.67%), manufacturing (1.65%), chemicals (1.39%), medical and precision instruments (1.11%), and finance (1.04%). In contrast, transportation and storage (-0.56%), textiles and apparel (-0.49%), and food, beverage, and tobacco (-0.44%) declined.
Most of the top 10 stocks by market capitalization were also strong. SK Hynix surged by 4.2%. Doosan Enerbility (2.6%), LG Energy Solution (2.2%), Samsung Electronics (1.7%), and Samsung Biologics (1.1%) also posted notable gains. Hanwha Aerospace was the only one among the top 10 to fall, dropping by 3.8%.
This performance is attributed to a rebound in U.S. markets overnight, led by technology stocks. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index in New York rose by 0.87% in the previous session.
The KOSDAQ also opened at 880.61, up 0.98% from the previous day. As of 9:17 a.m., it had slightly retreated to 877.49.
In the KOSDAQ market, net buying by individuals and institutions was also prominent, with net purchases of 9.42 billion won and 200 million won, respectively. Foreign investors were net sellers of 8.81 billion won.
Again, most sectors were on the rise. Finance (1.99%), electrical and electronics (1.97%), chemicals (1.13%), and non-metallic minerals (1.02%) showed notable strength. Textiles and apparel (-1.22%) and other manufacturing (-0.55%) declined.
The top 10 stocks by market capitalization on the KOSDAQ showed mixed performances. Ecopro BM (6.2%), Ecopro (2.9%), and HLB (2.4%) posted significant gains, while Pharmaresearch (-1.7%), Alteogen (-0.8%), and Samchundang Pharm (-0.9%) declined.
