Climate Tech Startup Starstech Acquires 30,087 Tons of Carbon Credits

Upcycling Marine Waste
Proven Results in Climate Change Response and Carbon Reduction

On October 23, climate tech company Starstech announced that it had acquired 30,087 tons of carbon credits from the KCCI Carbon Standard, operated by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The KCCI Carbon Standard is a program that verifies companies' greenhouse gas reduction achievements according to international standards and officially certifies their carbon reduction performance each year. It is a leading private certification program in Korea that supports the Ministry of Environment’s carbon neutrality goals (NDC). Notably, the certified reduction amounts can be used as voluntary emission credits, which are tradable between domestic and international companies.

Starstech develops and supplies eco-friendly de-icing agents that minimize environmental impact by upcycling marine waste. Its flagship product, 'ECO-ST,' is an environmentally friendly de-icer made from recycled starfish. While priced the same as other eco-friendly de-icers, it offers superior performance, including a lower iron corrosion rate compared to water, over a 90% reduction in road pavement damage, and up to a 70% reduction in soil pollution and crop damage. 'ECO-ST2' has demonstrated, through this carbon credit certification, that its use contributes not only to road safety and environmental protection but also to achieving carbon neutrality. Starstech's products are currently supplied to public roads managed by local governments nationwide.

Yang Seungchan, CEO of Starstech, stated, "The more our de-icers are used, the more they help the climate. They are also highly effective, and from a long-term perspective, can help reduce road maintenance costs. We will continue to expand sustainable climate tech solutions through the circular use of marine resources."
