Indoor Navigation Without GPS
Accurately Recognizes User Location and Direction with a Smartphone
Naver has officially launched its augmented reality (AR) indoor navigation service at COEX.
On October 23, Naver announced the launch of its indoor AR navigation service, which allows users to receive directions within indoor spaces through Naver Map, even without GPS.
The indoor AR navigation service accurately recognizes the user's location and direction using only a smartphone camera, even in areas where GPS signals cannot reach, and provides AR-based directions.
When users scan their surroundings with the camera, the route to their destination is intuitively displayed over the real-world environment. The service is designed to help users navigate large and complex indoor spaces, such as multi-purpose facilities, without getting lost.
Along with this update, the user interface (UI) for indoor convenience facilities has also been improved. Users can now more easily locate amenities such as restaurants, cafes, elevators, restrooms, and information desks.
The indoor AR navigation service is currently available at COEX. Since August, Naver Map has been piloting the AR navigation service at Naver 1784 and Green Factory to enhance the stability of the technology and service. Naver plans to gradually expand the service to more facilities, focusing on complex spaces with high foot traffic.
In addition, Naver Map has introduced the 'Flying View 3D' service, which allows users to explore major landmarks across Korea in vivid three-dimensional detail. Flying View 3D is initially available in the areas surrounding 10 major attractions, including Cheomseongdae in Gyeongju, COEX in Seoul, Songdo Central Park in Incheon, Jeonju Hanok Village, and BEXCO in Busan.
Naver Map plans to expand Flying View 3D to more of Korea's major landmarks and their surrounding areas. The service is also expected to help international tourists visiting Korea experience the country's key attractions more realistically through Naver Map.
Choi Seungrak, Head of Naver Map services, stated, "There is limitless synergy between mapping and spatial intelligence technologies, and we will continue to explore various ways to deliver even more innovative service experiences to our users."
